A commodities trader at an oil company is no different than any other trader, but this is a small world where relationships matter. From crude oil, to intermediate feedstocks, to finished products, commercial traders work to balance the lengths and shorts of a refining system. People who choose the path of a trader within an oil company often seek long term stability and less movement.
Operations Management :. As an engineer, there is one typical path for those interested in operations — Operations Management. People on this path typically spend 10 — 15 years within several engineering roles. For those who have chosen the path of operations, they can find themselves in roles of increasing responsibility, including even the possibility of refinery manager. A typical refinery should also have a good balance of technical folks in these positions, as well as people who have worked their way up the ranks in operations.
Safety, Health, and E nvironment. You may have noticed that so far I have no t mentioned career progression in the Safety, Health, and Environmental department. While every oil company stresses Safety, Health, and Environment above all other factors, the irony is that no company really has a good plan for developing SHE talent. Almost to the contrary, individuals find themselves placed in the SHE group often as a result of poor performance in other roles. Makes you wonder about priorities, right? Nonetheless, SHE groups still provide opportunities for engineers to learn about regulatory compliance , government policies, and managing people be haviors.
While I have not specifically covered the different types of management roles that one can assume through the refinery career ladder, just know that they are all available. As refinery and supply chain organizations are complex, it is not uncommon for all management positions to be occupied by engineers.
Most refinery management members do not have MBAs, and most have worked their way up the career ladder. Many employees transition between the various fields of engineering, commercial, and operations, and often possess the ability to explore both technical and managerial opportunities. There are also parallel positions in different countries and continents, so the potential is effectivel y endless. The simple truth is that there are insufficient qua lified engineers in this industry today.

ChemE's possibly have a higher likelihood in excelling in those roles, but it's not uncommon to have other disciplines progress. My best advise is for other engineering disciplines to actively push to enter roles that are stepping stones for refinery career development. I am now exploring other possibilities and having heard that downstream oil is presumably doing pretty well as a result of low oil prices I though that would be a good place to start. And is it as internationally mobile as working in drilling??

Less Dec 26, Refinery operations typically work a cadence similar to: 2 days on day shift, 2 days off, 3 days on night shift, 2 days off, 2 days on day shift. It's called swing shifts as you are swinging from day shift to night shift on every other set. Since there are 7 days a week, that's how you get this 3-day shift either on or off every couple of sets.
However, the work is stable in downstream. I would not say that the refining business will necessarily do well with low oil prices. Most graduate jobs ask for chemical, mechanical or electrical, I've never seen anything which a petro eng grad could apply for although I'd like to go in to downstream instead of upstream.

Finally, the ability to chemically synthesise oil and gas from more types of natural materials will blur the line between renewable and fossil fuels to the extent where it becomes a forgotten issue. The ability to synthesise these products will mean that even fossil fuels can be readily replaced so the market will drive the source again.
Globally, emerging countries will also want to capitalise on their oil reserves — providing, literally and figuratively, a pipeline of growth for the future. The industry will also become more collaborative. The billions of pounds spent on exploration and building platforms in new oil fields will be shared amongst multiple industry backers. As a whole, the oil and gas industry will become significantly more risk-averse, with companies working on joint ventures in order to avoid another big downturn.
Having project teams sitting around waiting in the wings for a new assignment will no longer exist. The industry will rely more and more on flexible workers to be brought in for specific projects. Technology will be a facilitator in the transformation of organisations. The future of oil and gas is unmanned platforms, with workers transitioning from offshore to onshore office-based roles. From a technology standpoint, the ideal solution would need to seamlessly connect all systems and hardware platforms across the various fields of operation, integrating exploration, drilling and production facilities, and ultimately delivering useful data and video streams to a central location, allowing the operators to make better and quicker decisions.
One of the challenges faced by the oil and gas industry is related to the fact that contractors and assets generally move from one location to another on a daily or weekly basis. Additional challenges are directly linked to environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures and frequent sandstorms. More than rigs need to be decommissioned by and the most straightforward option — simply sinking the rigs — is not feasible.
Oil companies need to come up with environmentally friendly ways of decommissioning rigs or face a potentially huge backlash from increasingly environmentally-conscious consumers. There are always competing interests and trade-offs to be considered with circumstances varying from project to project. For example, the most carbon-neutral option in one instance might be unacceptable from a health and safety HSE perspective in another. Tackling the problem demands that geoscientists and engineers make confident, data-driven decisions, using the most relevant and accurate research available.
