This is a nuts and bolts presentation of how the armies back then did business at both the operational and tactical levels of war. Written by one of the literary giants of military history, its only flaw is its typical, but slight, cult of Marlborough bias. Another Amazon Award winner. His genius in the use of parallels during investment insured no other country had the same advantage.

Another down in the weeds look at how the armies fought, but with the added benefit of a solid look at the equipment and weapons they fought with, and why. This is an older book, and thus some of the information once thought accurate has now been debunked cue eyewitness account of Platoon Fire compared to Fire by Rank , while national tactical norms have now been found not nearly as consistent as once thought.

Nevertheless, still some very useful information about why armies did what they did back then. Note: some used versions are available on Amazon for far less.

This is full color glossy, organization, OB, uniform and flag detail for wargamers type stuff, though sadly very few have come to Kindle. Think the Helion series on steroids. Seriously, these books discuss uniforms via clothing contracts and list every Colonel that commanded each regiment. However, because its French it offers so much more as regards Gallic research into the period.

Louis XIV the Sun King oversaw the expansion and then contraction of the French lands in his attempts to win land and glorie for him and his descendants. Whilst I knew a little of this era from the English changes of Monarchs during this time I knew nothing about the wars of Louis XIV or the reasons behind the various conflicts.

This book was a perfect introduction.

This Osprey book is exceptionally well illustrated. The pictures are indeed worth thousands of words. However, the maps, while very attractive, are oddly labeled and are really not all that helpful.

Background

This short history of the five wars of Louis XIV avoids a dry recitation of dates and instead discusses cross-cutting themes in the wars: how and why they stated; why they ended. It's a military history in the sense of grand strategy, with two chapters discussing the lives of two individuals, to provide some social depth. The book briefly recounts some major battles, but does not focus in depth on tactics, command structures, or logistics.

In that sense, it's an ideal overview for a reader inter This short history of the five wars of Louis XIV avoids a dry recitation of dates and instead discusses cross-cutting themes in the wars: how and why they stated; why they ended. In that sense, it's an ideal overview for a reader interested in France and its foreign policy in the period, and perhaps less ideal for a reader seeking a close analysis of the kingdom's military.
